PomeGran launches podcast demystifying fibre for consumers

Broadband provider PomeGran Inc. is joining the ranks of podcasters with a new program called The Fibre Files, available through Spotify and YouTube. The target market is consumers who may not know much about the world of fibre deployment, according to the company’s chairman and CEO. “One of the things which we found was we were trying to pivot to an extent to educate or become knowledgeable on the value of this fibre,” Kalai Kalaichelvan tells The Wire Report. “What is the use at the end of the day to an average citizen?” The Fibre Files will shun heavy emphasis on technology, says Kalaichelvan, who thinks most other podcasts focus too much on the nuts and bolts. Such discussion can confuse customers, the chair believes. “They really don’t understand between what is the value of fibre versus phone line,” he states. “So what we are trying to do is really bringing this podcast… make them really knowledgeable.” The podcast wants to highlight the future of broadband and the communities which are served. An early guest on the series is Peter Politis, mayor of Cochrane, Ont., where PomeGran has facilities. “Those are the kind of people you want to bring in there,” Kalaichelvan says. “We don't want to have people who are on the technology side of things.” PomeGran has been promoting its business through brochures and social media, and the podcast is one more tool to get its message out. The CEO thinks there are three prongs of information The Fibre Files can address. The first is the economics of broadband. Communities need connectivity and this podcast helps clear up misconceptions about what technology can and cannot do. PomeGran’s market is mostly in rural Canada. Kalaichelvan notes that many younger people are abandoning small towns to move to larger centres. This creates the social factor, the second prong of information for the podcast. Those seniors still living in rural areas can use fibre to keep in touch with children and grandchildren. Finally, the firm thinks fibre can augment the work of data centres. Companies can use small modular data centres rather than relying on mammoth centres springing up everywhere. The Fibre Files is hosted by broadcaster Sam Laprade. Kalaichelvan thinks she is a good fit for the role. “The first criterion is, she doesn’t know telecom. That is the good news,” he laughs. “People like me, we know technology so much, as soon as you start the topic, we dive into the technology. And Sam doesn’t know technology that much.” Laprade has worked with PomeGran on other projects over the years, including webinars. The pair have a good working relationship. There will be eight to 12 episodes of The Fibre Files annually. ppark@thewirereport.ca
