AI is a major concern for equipment firm Ericsson

OTTAWA–Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a major factor in the work done by Ericsson AB. The Wire Report recently attended an open house at the main location of the Swedish equipment manufacturer. Over the course of half an hour, the company and assorted vendors displayed their wares. AI is never far from their view, according to the president of Ericsson Canada. “It’s impacting all parts of our business in a positive way,” Nishant Grover states. “From an organizational standpoint, from a people and skill standpoint, we’re also applying AI in our technology.” AI is transforming networks and helps the manufacturer manage services for its long list of clients. It helps Ericsson automate how it manages customer networks. The firm was founded 150 years ago in Sweden, while the Canadian operations have been going for 73 years. More than 3,000 workers are employed with the equipment company, while Canadian research and development (R&D) has averaged $390 million annually since 2016, a figure the company expects to grow shortly. Ericsson works with all the important players in Canadian telecom, including BCE Inc.’s Bell, Rogers Communications Inc. and Telus Corp. It similarly deals with smaller outfits like Bragg Communications Inc.’s Eastlink, Quebecor Inc.’s Videotron, TBayTel and Xplore Inc. It also has a presence in the hydro utility marketplace. Since 2013, it has collaborated with more than 20 universities across the nation, including the University of Waterloo and Polytechnique Montréal. There are co-op opportunities and full-time jobs for recent graduates. Ericsson certifies equipment for regulators such as Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. It also certifies gear for regulators in other parts of the world. The company is a partner with the Centre for Excellence for Next Generation Networks in Ottawa. Grover is proud of the work the firm does in promoting ecological endurance. “Carbon zero is one of the big areas of focus for us,” he says. “Sustainability is a big part for us.” Ericsson’s Ottawa campus has many windows which attract birds that fly into the structure. It is working with Safe Wings Ottawa to collect dead and injured birds. The wounded animals can be nursed back to health. The green team at the company is also hoping to convince its landlord to allow it to install solar panelling to cut down on emissions and have a more environmentally friendly atmosphere. Ericsson is a major player in the development of 6G networks. It also has global experience in public safety networks, expertise it hopes to duplicate in the Canadian market. ppark@thewirereport.ca
