Claudette Jaiko has been appointed as producer of The National Film Board’s (NFB) Studio Ontario et Ouest. She starts in the new position on December 9 at the NFB’s Toronto offices. She has been working in French and English radio, film and television production for 25 years. A former executive director of Telefilm Canada, François Macerola has been named president of the political commission of the Liberal Party in Quebec. He will be responsible for coordinating the political direction of the Liberal Party. Macerola, who unsuccessfully ran for the Liberals in the last Quebec election, has been conducting a Canadian content study for Canadian Heritage (CCR, June 7/02, April 12/02, March 15/02). Joanne MacDonald has been named VP of CTV news administration, while Tom Haberstroh assumes the role of VP and executive producer of Canada AM. MacDonald was previously managing director of CTV News. In his new role, Haberstroh will continue to co-produce CTV news specials. As well, Mark Sikstrom has been appointed executive producer of CTV Newsnet, and Carol Ashurst becomes director of research, archives and archive sales. All of the appointees have been with the CTV organization for at least 20 years. Jay Switzer has been appointed president and CEO of CHUM Ltd., as company founder Allan Waters announced he was stepping down as chair and president. Waters will continue to provide counsel and advice as a consultant to the company, and will continue to serve as director of CHUM. With the new title, Switzer also acquires a spot on the company’s board of directors. He will oversee all operating divisions of the company, and he will serve with Jim Waters and Ron Waters as the company’s executive management committee. Jim Waters, currently executive VP, assumes the position of chair of the board. Ron Waters leaves behind his title of executive VP of CHUM to become vice-chair. Stepping down as vice-chair is Fred Sherratt, former COO. Sherratt remains a director and a consultant to the company. Switzer will be announcing new presidents for radio and television at a future date. He remains as president of CHUM Television, and Jim Waters as president of CHUM radio until replacements are named. Daniel Gourd has been named executive VP of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.’s French television network. He joined the French television team in 1985. One of his priorities in the coming year will be to complete the repositioning of the French television network. Former Ottawa mayor Jim Watson is leaving his job as president of the Canadian Tourism Commission to become a municipal affairs specialist and to work on-air at CHUM’s The New RO in Ottawa. Dave Forget has been appointed to the position of director of Telefilm Canada’s Feature Film Unit, Ontario. Before shifting to Telefilm’s Toronto office, he worked as a senior investment analyst with the government funding agency’s Western regional office. Before joining Telefilm, Forget was a founder of the Vancouver-based distribution company Red Sky Entertainment Ltd. Kate Hanley has been given the newly created position of president of Women in Film and Television – Toronto. She joins the organization from the Jim Pattison Trade Group, where as VP of programming and development, she headed the Toronto operations and multimedia content brands. Clifford Lincoln was re-elected chair of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage in mid-November after it reconvened. Paul Bonwick and Jim Abbott were elected vice-chairs of the committee. Frank Bingham has resigned from the board of directors of Dion Entertainment Corp. The board of directors now consists of Leo Dion, Lyle Rowland and Steen Hansen. Vancouver-based Dion is having trouble meeting financial commitments to the 2003 Bingo Magic game. Tony Lacombe will act as executive director of the CRTC’s broadcasting directorate from December 2 until December 31. In addition to his regular duties, Jacques Langlois will act in the position from January 1 until January 30. Jean-Pierre Blais, who was in the position, left December 2 to become assistant deputy minister of international and intergovernmental affairs at Canadian Heritage (CCR, Nov. 7/02; CCR Update, Oct. 30/02).
