Sandra Macdonald has been named president and CEO of the Canadian Television Fund (CTF). She replaces former president and CEO Garry Toth, who is on leave of absence for medical reasons (CCR, June 21/02). Macdonald was government film commissioner and chair of the National Film Board from 1995-2001, and president of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association from 1992-95. She has also worked for the CRTC and Communications Canada and was a producer. She is a founding board member of the CTF. Alek Krstajic, senior VP of sales, marketing and product development for Rogers Cable Inc., has been named to the board of directors of ViXS Systems Inc. (See related article in this issue). Entertainment and music lawyer Doran Chandler has joined the firm Roberts & Stahl in Vancouver. Laurie Haines has been appointed group VP of information technology at Bell Globemedia. He will work toward formulating a company-wide IT strategic plan aimed at enhancing the company's print, broadcast and Internet divisions. Previously, he was VP of information technology at Bell Globemedia-owned CTV Inc. Also, he worked for 17 years at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and for four years was VP of information technology and chief information officer at NetStar Communications Inc. George Lawton has been promoted to CFO at Mainframe Entertainment Inc. He will be responsible for all of the company's financial planning and operations, and will provide input into general business affairs. Lawton joined Mainframe, which specializes in computer animation, in 2000 as corporate controller and was later promoted to VP. Rita Deverell, who co-founded VisionTV, is joining the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) as its news and current affairs senior producer, executive producer and VP. Isabel Metcalfe, a friend of Canadian Heritage minister Sheila Copps and a former lobbyist for the Canadian Film and Television Production Association, has been retained by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network Inc. (APTN). She will lobby for the financial investments necessary for licence adherence, content requirements and future growth. She will be lobbying Canadian Heritage, Health Canada, Industry Canada, CRTC, Indian and Northen Affairs and the National Film Board on behalf of APTN. Marlene Lone has been promoted to the newly created position of creative director of regional television at CHUM Television. She joined CHUM in 1985 as publicist for CKVR-TV, moved into creative services as a writer and promotions producer in 1990, and was involved in the rebranding of CKVR into The New VR in 1995, and worked in promotions at The New RO from 1998. Look Communications Inc. has named Stéphanie Brody as its new communications manager. Dana Fields joins Odeon Films as manager of media relations for its release schedule. Previously, she was a publicist for CHUM Ltd.'s Citytv and Pulse 24. She replaces Andrea Grau Clunie, who has become manager of media and public relations for the Toronto International Film Festival Group. Jim Van Horne and Paul Romanuk, who left TSN to join the Team network, were among the employees let go by CHUM Ltd. when it shut down four of its all-sports radio stations. In memoryFormer broadcast executive Jim Thompson, who was lured out of retirement in January to become chief executive officer of the Canadian Olympic Committee, died of a heart attack in mid-August. He was 60. Thompson had taken up his new duties in March and was focusing on the development of elite athletes. During his broadcast career, Thompson was president of specialty sports channel TSN and NetStar Communications (CCR, Jan. 31/02).
