Telecom Ottawa, the communications subsidiary of Hydro Ottawa, has appointed three senior managers. Lucie Adam signs on as director of network operations and technology. She most recently worked at Norigen Communications and has experience at Sprint Canada. The new director of engineering and field services is Claude Poithier, formerly of AT&T Canada, MetroNet, and Rogers. Vidéotron Télécom alumnus Jacques Taillefer is the director of sales and marketing. Call-Net Enterprises Inc. has named three new independent members of the board of directors. Robert Franklin is chair of Placer Dome Inc., ClubLink Corp., and ELI Eco Logic Inc. Wyoming Associates Ltd. president Wendy Leaney joins the board, as does Barry Campbell of APCO Worldwide. David Bowden has been named president of consumer services and SOHO for Sprint Canada. Most recently president and managing director of Empori.com Inc., he has experience at Labatt/Interbrew, Canada Post Corp., Warner Lambert and General Motors. Bell Canada’s chief strategy officer Bernard Courtois has been appointed president of the International Institute of Communications. The IIC is an independent, non-profit forum that allows industry, government and academics to examine and discuss communication trends. Erik Dysthe, chair/CEO of MDSI Mobile Data Solutions Inc., adds the president’s title to his mantle. He replaces Gerald Chew, who has resigned from the Richmond BC company. Paul Thiel is now director of the group for advanced information technology at the BC Institute of Technology. He has worked for PMC-Sierra Inc., Telus and MPR Teltech Ltd. He succeeds Michael Hrybyk, who has taken a two-year leave of absence to become president/CEO of BCNet. The Competition Tribunal has two new members. Eleanor Ruth Dawson and François Lemieux were recently appointed for seven-year terms. George Christidis, the former director of government affairs at the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, is now executive assistant to veterans affairs minister Rey Pagtakhan. Christidis left the CWTA last fall to join the staff of previous veterans affairs minister Ron Duhamel. FCC commissioner Kevin Martin has shuffled his office staff. Samuel Feder is now the legal advisor for wireless and international matters. He replaces Monica Shah Desai, who moves to the common carrier bureau’s competitive pricing division. Succeeding Feder as legal advisor for common carrier issues is Daniel Gonzalez. He worked for XO Communications Inc. and was an aide to Rachelle Chong when she was a commissioner. The final commissioner’s spot on the FCC has yet to be determined. The nomination of Jonathan Adelstein (NL, Feb. 26/02) is being opposed by Senate minority leader Trent Lott, who alleges the 40-year-old is too young. Sen. Lott, who is backing Andrew Levin for the Democratic spot, made the announcement one day after the judiciary committee rejected President Bush’s nomination of a Lott friend to the federal appeals court.
