Broadcasters, specialties rally against CRTC plan to hit them with a telecom “tax”

Annual satellite rates are poised to go up $2 million for the CBC and by 350,000 for CTV Inc unless the CRTC alters a decision that would result in broadcast licensees subsidizing the cost of universal telephone service. Released late last year, Telecom Decision 2000-745 requires all telecom carriers to pay into a subsidy fund to offset the cost of providing phone service to rural and remote areas (CCR, March 29/01).
