CRTC denies application for Concordia transmitter

The Concordia Student Broadcasting Corp. has been denied permission by the CRTC to put up a new transmitter in downtown Montreal.  CSBC had applied for the new transmitter, which would operate at 107.9 FM, so that reception would be better around the downtown Corcordia campus. It has said its station CJLO is picked up easily in the area of its west-end campus, but its AM signals have trouble penetrating all the concrete buildings downtown. Vermont Public Radio is appealing to its listeners in Montreal to pressure the CRTC to not allow a Concordia University students group to launch a new FM signal that would be on the same frequency. A notice on the website for VPR, posted Wednesday, said it would be “impossible” to listen to this station, which is on 107.9 FM, in downtown Montreal if the Concordia Student Broadcasting Corp. is approved to put its station on the same frequency.
