Former RIM CEO heads clean technology foundation

Jim Balsillie, former CEO of Research in Motion Ltd., is the new chairman of Sustainable Development Technology Canada, the Department of Natural Resources said in release a Tuesday. Balsillie left RIM in 2012, before the company changed its name to BlackBerry this year. SDTC “is a not-for-profit foundation that finances and supports the development and demonstration of clean technologies,” its website says. RIM reports subscriber loss, lower sales

Research In Motion Ltd. reported lower third quarter losses, lower sales of its BlackBerry smartphones and, for the first time, a loss on its subscriber base, the company said in a quarterly earnings report released Thursday. RIM said its worldwide BlackBerry subscriber base fell to 79 million users as of Dec. 1, down from 80 million at the end of the second quarter. It said it shipped 6.9 million BlackBerry smartphones and 255,000 PlayBook tablets during the three-month period, versus 7.4 million and 130,000, respectively, in the second quarter.
