Internet speedometers ‘are broken,’ Sandvine says

Waterloo, Ont.-based Sandvine Inc. released a new report about Internet quality for applications such as video streaming and speed tests. Sandvine released the whitepaper, entitled "Exposing the Technical and Commercial Factors Underlying Internet Quality of Experience," on Monday. Among its conclusions, the report said Internet "speedometers are broken," with tools like Speedtest and the Netflix Speed Index failing to accurately measure or reflect access network speed. Sandvine also found that YouTube "consistently experienced a quality downtime" during lunchtime and peak evening hours due to "a commercial decision by YouTube," a release from the company said. Sandvine reports profits, higher revenues

Canadian network technology company Sandvine Inc. reported profits and revenue of $27.5 million US for the fourth quarter of 2012, the company said Thursday. Sandvine said in a release profits were $6.5 million US in the fourth quarter, up from a net loss of $2.1 million US in the same period of 2011. The revenues of $27.5 million rose from $21.8 million US in the previous quarter. “During the quarter the Company recorded a one-time, $3.8 million reduction in operating expenses for Ontario government funding related to its ongoing project under the Next Generation of Jobs Fund,” the release said.
