SOCAN acquires MediaNet

The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) has purchased Seattle-based music technology company MediaNet. The organization said the move will improve its ability to match music to its right holder and help increase revenue for rights holders, especially those whose music is played on digital platforms that rely on uploads, such as Facebook Inc.’s social network and Google Inc.’s YouTube. “With more than 51 million sound recordings in its database, each containing a unique audio identifier, MediaNet will provide SOCAN with authoritative information pertaining to master rights (sound recordings), and will augment already strong matching capabilities for all kinds of performances and reproductions of music on radio, digital, live, satellite, film and TV and other delivery of music to...
