Hackers claim responsibility for WCIT disruption

Web access to documents for the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) was disrupted Wednesday as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) came under criticism for approving Internet snooping standards. The Centre for Democracy and Technology (CDT), an American nonprofit that advocates for Internet freedom, said in an updated website posting Wednesday that member countries of the ITU, an agency of the UN, had approved technological standards “that could give governments and companies the ability to sift through all of an Internet user’s traffic—including emails, banking transactions, and voice calls—without adequate privacy safeguards.
