The Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Thursday issued a number of guidelines for police to follow when asking mobile service providers to provide information based on cell-tower activity to assist with investigations. The judgment applies to "tower dump" orders, in which police request records about activity involving certain towers over a specified period of time. The decision was made in response to applications from Rogers Communications Inc. and Telus Corp., seeking a court clarification on the responsibilities of police and service providers after receiving some "particularly broad and onerous production orders" issued by Peel regional police, just outside of Toronto, last year in relation to an investigation into a string of jewelry-store robberies.
