BCE to appeal court’s $137 million judgment for Quebecor

BCE Inc. says it will appeal to the Supreme Court in a case over satellite-TV piracy in which it was ordered to pay $137 million in damages to Quebecor Inc. and its TVA subsidiary in a decision issued Friday. In handing down the ruling, the Quebec Court of Appeal increased the damages from the $1 million award ordered by the Quebec Superior Court in July 2012. In that decision, the court said Bell didn’t work hard enough to prevent the illegal decoding of its satellite signals between 1999 and 2005 despite having knowledge of the extent of satellite piracy and the technical ability to fight it.
