Ethics commish says MP broke rules writing letters to CRTC

Mary Dawson, the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner, said Wednesday that former conservative MP Parm Gill breached the Conflict of Interest Act by sending letters of support to the CRTC. Gill sent two letters regarding radio licence applications to the CRTC while serving as a parliamentary secretary. Private members' bill C-475 would impose an “unwieldy” financial and administrative burden on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Conservative MP Parm Gill said Thursday. During a second reading debate on the bill, first put forward in the House on Feb. 26 by NDP MP Charmaine Borg, Gill said the requirement in the bill that organizations notify the privacy commissioner of potential data breaches so that she may judge the risks associated with them “would increase costs and burdensome compliance procedures for Canadian businesses and would impose an unwieldy financial and administrative burden on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, generating more costs than benefits for Canadian taxpayers.” Gill said government privacy Bill C-12, which would amend the...
