Google buys mapping company Waze

Google Inc. bought Waze Ltd., a company that develops mapping applications with real-time updates, for about $1 billion US, Reuters reported.  Google made the announcement on its blog on Tuesday, in a post by Brian McClendon, vice-president of geo. He wrote that “we’re excited about the prospect of enhancing Google Maps with some of the traffic update features provided by Waze and enhancing Waze with Google’s search capabilities.” Waze, an Israeli company with offices in Palo Alto, Calif., adds a crowd-sourcing element to mapping, allowing users to contribute data about the route they are taking by driving with the app open, as well as contribute additional information on road conditions like accidents and traffic jams.
