Alberta's most senior CBC television executive quit May 18, partly because of management's plan to eliminate local supper-hour television newscasts. The resignation of Joe Novak, regional director of television for the province, is a blow to the corporation, and comes on the heels of a controversial restructuring blueprint detailed earlier in the week by CBC president Robert Rabinovitch. Richard Cavanaugh has been appointed VP radio, of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. Most recently, Cavanaugh was VP regulatory affairs and research, for the Canadian Trucking Alliance. From 1993-99, he was national director, external relations, with Stentor Telecom Policy Inc. Before joining Stentor, he was senior policy analyst with the Canadian Conference of the Arts. Ted Boyle has been named president and CEO at Inetcable.com of Ottawa. A veteran of the cable and satellite television industries, Boyle brings a wealth of broadcasting experience to the emerging Internet broadcaster. Boyle played a significant role in the launch of new services in the cable, direct-to-home satellite and wireless cable businesses. Previously, he was president and CEO at Bell ExpressVu and was instrumental in bringing MMDS service to South Asia. They're still playing musical chairs at Bell Canada. Josée Goulet is now president of Bell ActiMedia. She was formerly president of Bell Distribution Inc. Randy Reynolds, the ex-president of Bell Ontario and president and CEO of Bell Mobility, has been named president of Bell Nexxia. His Bell Ontario position goes to Terry Mosey. He was most recently senior VP business sales and services at Bell Canada. Stu Verge is the new president global operations at Teleglobe. He used to be president and CEO of Bell Atlantic subsidiary Bell Atlantic Global Networks Inc. Lisa Donnan, formerly of Bell Nexxia and MCI, is Teleglobe's new chief marketing officer. Former Bell Nexxia president and CEO Marc Bouchard is now Teleglobe's president, North American markets and corporate development. Serge Fortin has left his job as president of Bell ActiMedia to become president global markets for Teleglobe. Mark Eckhout is the new CFO at the carrier. He is a veteran of Ameritech and Bell Mobility. Suzanne Steeves has resigned as senior VP and GM of the CTV Sports Group. She began as Baton's head of entertainment in-house production and was an executive in Baton's specialty channels. Steeves oversaw the programming of sporting events on The CTV Network, Sportsnet, and the Outdoor Life Network. Since her appointment in November 1997, she was part of the team that acquired some of Canada's most-sought-after sports programs including NHL cable rights, Blue Jays Baseball, and PGA TOUR events. Most recently, Steeves oversaw the launch of CTV Sportsnet.com. Rick Brace will be now be responsible for TSN, RDS, CTVNetwork Sports, OLN, as well as NetStar Sports Sales. Louise Pelletier has been appointed to the board of the Canadian Film Development Corp. Since 1973, Pelletier has worked in the television industry, first as a researcher, then as a scriptwriter. She worked for Radio-Canada and several Quebec-based production firms. From 1984 to 1998, she was a board member of the Societe des Auteurs de Radio-Television-Cinema, and was a scriptwriters' representative at the Institut Quebecois de Cinema from 1989 to 1992. A pair of senior executives at Rogers New Media have left that firm to join a small e-commerce startup founded by a pair of Toronto teenagers. Michael Abramsky left his job as chief executive of Rogers New Media, a unit of Rogers Communications Inc of Toronto, to become chief executive and chair of BuyBuddy.com. Butch Langlois, who joined Rogers New Media last summer as a VP finance and operations, left at the same time to become BuyBuddy.com's CFO. BuyBuddy.com co-founders Michael Furdyk, 17, and Michael Hayman, 19, are now VP business development and chief technology officer, respectively, of the company. Furdyk will finish high school in June. Iceberg Media.com, Toronto, has appointed Ted Boyd as president and COO. Boyd will replace Jim Hardy, who remains on the board.
