James McCoubrey, formerly executive VP and COO at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp, has been appointed chair of Young & Rubicam Canada. McCoubrey spent 20 years at Young & Rubicam, becoming president and CEO of its Canadian operations in 1977, before entering the broadcast field. After leaving Young & Rubicam and before joining the CBC, he was president and CEO of Télémedia from 1990 to 1997. Chris Taylor has left the Canadian Cable Television Association, where he was VP of legal and regulatory affairs, to return to private practice. As well, Beverley Kirshenblatt, the CCTA’s director of legal and regulatory affairs, has moved over to the Canadian Association of Broadcasters as VP of television. At its annual convention last week, the Canadian Cable Television Association announced its 2001-2002 board of directors, with Shaw Communications Inc CEO Jim Shaw continuing as chair. Vidéotron Communications Inc president and COO Guy Beauchamp is secretary, and Rogers Cablesystems Ltd president and CEO John Tory is treasurer. Directors on the board are: Cogeco Cable Inc president and CEO Louis Audet, EastLink Cable Systems president John Bragg, Vidéotron ltée VP of regulatory and public affairs Pierre Gagnon, Rogers Communications Inc senior VP of planning Edward Rogers, and Shaw Communications senior VP of corporate and regulatory affairs Ken Stein. Representing small cable systems are: Coopérative de Câblodistribution de l’Arrière Pays general manager Fernand Roy (east), Norcom Telecommunications Ltd general manager Warren Ritchie (central), and Westman Communications Group president and CEO David Baxter (west). Kevin Shea, former president of Global Television Network, joins Bell Globemedia Inc as the new executive VP of convergence. Jerry Good has been named to a two-year term as the Telemedia chair in emerging communications technologies at Ryerson University’s School of Radio and Television Arts. Catherine Donohue has been upped to VP of distribution and Canadian sales at Nelvana. On top of her duties of overseeing sales of the company’s programs to Canadian broadcast and home video markets, she will also manage its international sales distribution and creative services activities. Murray Shostak joins Montreal-based Productions La Fête in the newly created position of senior VP of corporate development. He is charged with developing the digital specialty channel Equestrian Planet/Planête Equestre. Julie Bergeron has left her position as deputy manager of the European office of Telefilm Canada, headquartered in Paris. She continues as a consultant. Joining Telefilm’s Paris office is Sophie Grandmagnac as executive assistant to Sheila de LaVarende, director of the European office. Marc Pichette has been named communications director at the French-language arts specialty channel La Télé des Arts, the last analog channel to be licensed. Bohdan Zajcew has been appointed president of the Association for Télé-Education in Canada for a two-year term. Access Alberta, Saskatchewan Communications Network, TVOntario, Télé-Québec, the Aboriginal Peoples’ Television Network and Open Learning Agency belong to the organization, which is devoted to promoting the interests of educational broadcasters. Canwest Global Communications Inc has hired Kenneth Goldstein as executive VP and chief strategy officer, effective Sept. 1. He was an architect of the Canadian Association of Broadcaster’s FuturePlan, the blueprint for the future of the Canadian broadcasting industry that was released in 1998. As well, Murdoch Davies, deputy publisher and editor of the Times Colonist in Victoria, has been appointed VP and editor-in-chief of CanWest-owned Southam News. He will "play a critical role in overall convergence objectives, particularly in linking the Southam newsrooms across the country with CanWest’s television and Internet news gathering operations..." Leslie Drueger has been named promotions director at Teletoon.
