Lawyer Mark Hayes, a partner in Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP’s technology, e-commerce & communications group, is leaving the firm to join Ogilvy Renault. Hayes is one of Canada’s leading media and technology lawyers, and has represented such groups as the Canadian Association of Internet Providers, the Canadian Cable Television Association, and Bell Canada before the Copyright Board of Canada. Stephanie Szick has left the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) as manager of communications. She will join Industry Canada’s communications and marketing branch effective August 6. Another former employee of the CAB, then-manager of government relations Andrew Cameron, has begun his new job as Parliamentary relations officer at the CRTC. Paulette Leclair, who held that position until being seconded to Canadian Heritage a year ago, won’t be returning. Michel Brisson has taken on the role of president of SAP Canada Inc. His career at SAP began six years ago as a VP of sales for SAP France. He has more than 30 years of global and local business experience. Lou Riccoboni, Huw Williams and Joanne Dobson of IMPACT Public Affairs have been retained by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) to lobby the federal government on digital copyright issues. CARL has been a vocal opponent of several proposed measures to protect copyright owners since some options might unduly lock away academic and important cultural material (CNM, April 19/02). Blast Radius, Toronto, has added three staff. Sanjiv Purba joins as VP of production, leading the service delivery teams, while the company’s client strategy group is enhanced with the appointments of Mary Joan Walker and Scott Heron. Prior to joining Blast, Purba was director of Microsoft Canada’s consulting services e-solutions group. Berni Wood has resigned from the Canadian Television Fund to explore new professional opportunities. Wood was recently hired by the fund to increase its regional presence. But it was announced at the Banff Television Festival in June that the new regional VP positions were being axed. The New Media Innovation Centre, Vancouver, has appointed Hong Yee Wong as a NewMIC scientist. He has relocated from Singapore and will be conducting visualization research in NewMIC’s state-of-the-art immersive media lab in collaboration with the National Research Council. Wong was previously with Singapore’s Realistix Laboratories as its CTO after a stint as head of the visualization research division of Singapore’s Institute of High Performance Computing. Jim Munson, a respected veteran broadcaster with CTV and most recently a consultant on First Nations governance at the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, has been appointed senior communication officer in the Prime Minister’s Office. Munson held several senior positions at CTV, including senior Parliamentary correspondent in Ottawa, and as bureau chief in London, Beijing and Halifax. Christopher Henderson, CEO of the Delphi Group and a former CEO of the Ottawa Rehab Centre, has been named chair of the new board at the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation. Henderson was first appointed to the position in November 2001, and will continue to hold the job until April, 2003. Jacques Guerette, VP of communications at Zarlink Semiconductor, has been named vice-chair. Joanne Dobson of IMPACT Public Affairs has been retained by the Canadian Booksellers Association (CBA) to lobby on copyright and anti-trust rules. The CBA recently lost a fight to have Canadian Heritage block the proposed new Amazon.ca service. Ryan O’Neill has been appointed sales/marketing coordinator of Decima Publishing Inc. He has worked for Powderban, Nomad Industries, Metro magazine and the Ottawa Business News.
