SMART Toronto, Liberty Village amalgamateSMART Toronto and the Liberty Village New Media Centre (LVNMC) have confirmed that they are merging into a single entity to be renamed the SMART Toronto Technology Alliance. The former LVNMC infrastructure will become a new advisory board to the organization, with Bruce Graham as chair and former LVNMC interim executive director Julian Wharton responsible for day-to-day operations. Canadian NEW MEDIA will have comments from its interview with SMART president Cindy Pearson in its next issue. Industry Canada supports Treaty Nine web siteIndustry Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy initiative has funded a new web site exploring the signing of Treaty Nine to the tune of $24,267. The web site was developed by four youth interns under the guidance of the Oshki-Pimache-O-Win Institute. The project explores the 1905-1906 negotiations between the Government of Canada and the Ojibway and Cree nations. Particularly interesting are first-person narratives from then Crown commissioner Duncan Campbell Scott, who was instrumental in having the treaty ratified. Campbell Scott is perhaps best known for his work as one of the "Confederation Group" of Canadian poets. It will be interesting to compare and contrast his journals leading to the treaty with his love/hate relationship with Canada’s native peoples, as made evident by such poems as the "Onondaga Madonna" – online as part of the National Library of Canada’s Canadian Poetry Archive. INIS does a lot more with just a little moreThe Institut national de l’image et du son (INIS) has released its annual report and statistics that indicate it doubled the number of projects it undertook despite a mere 15% increase in its budget. That includes eight new media initiatives. A summary of the Montreal-based organization’s report is expected to be posted to its web site later today, and a full version is available by emailing info@inis.quc.ca. CANARIE provides $1.3 million to link Alberta high schoolsCANARIE Inc. has committed $1.3 million in funding to link six high schools in remote northern Alberta. The links will be made via the province’s new SuperNet broadband network and NeteraNet, Alberta’s research Internet. The connection will allow students and instructors from separate locations to interact in real time using high-quality video collaboration facilities. The project will be led by Craig Montgomerie, a professor of instructional technology at the University of Alberta. Competition Bureau charges Internet Registry of CanadaThe Competition Bureau laid charges on October 28 against the Internet Registry of Canada and its principals for making misleading representations. The charges stem from invoices for domain name services sent out by the company and made to look like official Canadian government documents. The mailings allegedly gave the impression that domain name holders were existing customers of, and had to re-register their domain names with, the Internet Registry of Canada. Blast Radius takes Digital Marketing magazine prizeToronto-based Blast Radius has won the title of digital agency of the year from Digital Marketing magazine. The magazine cited the company’s high-profile global clients, ability to increase its international business and an aggressive stance in the tough Toronto market for its choice of Blast. RockDétente retains ad rep companyRockDétente, the FM radio network owned by Astral Media, has outsourced the selling of advertising on its web site to Montreal-based BRANCHEZ-VOUS! Radio staff will continue to develop the site and its promotional efforts for the web and radio. CHIN posts new preservation white papersThe Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) has posted two new white papers on digital preservation, including one titled XML and Digital Preservation, and one called Email – XML Demonstrator: A Technical Description. The papers are available on CHIN’s digital preservation testbed web site.
