Dawn Hunt, VP government and inter-carrier relations at Rogers Wireless Inc., has been elected as chair of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) effective immediately, replacing Ted Maksimowski, former president of Bell Mobility Investments (BMI). She was previously a vice-chair of the CWTA. Hunt’s career spans 25 years in the Canadian telecommunications industry having served with Rogers since 1994. Prior to joining Rogers, she spent 16 years at Unitel Communications (now AT&T Canada). Maksimowski left BMI in December to pursue other interests and therefore couldn’t remain chair of the CWTA. 724 Solutions Inc. has named Elda Rudd its VP corporate marketing. She is a former Nortel Networks director of marketing for the wireless Internet division. A telecom veteran with more than 12 years experience, she will be responsible for the global positioning of the company with an emphasis on the mobile operator market space. Most recently, Rudd founded Total Cabling Solutions and was the company’s president. Prior to that, she was VP marketing for Westwave Communications. Rudd will be based in the company’s Santa Barbara CA office. Paul Obert has been appointed VP worldwide sales at Redline Communications Inc. with the responsibility of managing the company’s global sales force. He has an extensive background in wireless systems including microwave and LMDS technologies. Prior to joining Redline, Obert was president and CEO of Diverse Telecom USA Inc. and senior VP of sales for P-Com Inc., among others. Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO) has named Ron Killeen as its new VP of business development and research. Killeen has more than 20 years of experience in the communications and IT sectors. He joins CITO from Nortel Networks Corp. where he was a director of large teams in the development and implementation of new communications technologies. André Bérard, Edward Lumley and Thomas O’Neill have been appointed to BCE Inc.’s board of directors. Bérard is chair of the board of the National Bank of Canada. Lumley is vice-chair of BMO Nesbitt Burns and chair of E.C.L. Associates Inc. O’Neill is former chair of PwC Consulting. Also, the company announced that Edward Newall and Guy Saint-Pierre will not stand for re-election as directors of BCE. Nortel Networks Corp. has shifted personnel in the executive offices. Masood Tariq has been appointed to the newly created position of president, global alliances. He will be responsible for leading and expanding the company’s strategic alliance program in addition to his current responsibilities as president for the Asia region. In his new capacity, Tariq will return to North America. The company has also announced that Robert Mao will begin another stint at Nortel as president and CEO of Nortel China. Yuan-Hao Lin, currently acting president Nortel China, will now become COO for the company’s Chinese operations. John Giamatteo, who has been responsible for sales in Japan and Korea, will now be responsible for all sales across the whole Asia Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, the ASEAN countries and Pakistan. The GSM Association (GSMA) has started preparing for changes it will soon make to its board of directors. The wireless technology group board has established an interim CEO board that will help the group develop a more focused strategy going forward. It will be led by Craig Ehrlich, an executive board member of SUNDAY. For the last six months, he has been head of the GSMA’s CEO advisory board. The interim board will consist of executives from Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, NTT DoCoMo, China Mobile, SingTel Group, Cingular Wireless, Telecom Italia Mobile, Sonera and AT&T Wireless. The selection of a full 23-member board will take place through mid-February. Late last month, Daniel Akerson, chair and CEO of XO Communications, announced that he will step down this month from his position following the restructuring of the bankrupt telecommunications provider. Akerson joined the company in September 1999 and will remain with the company as a consultant.
