The Fundamental Freedoms Project celebrates Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms on-air and online. In 1982, one of the most important documents in Canadian history was born. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides the framework for the free and democratic society we enjoy today. The Charter celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The Fundamental Freedoms Project, a production of SailorJones Media, is a multilingual, cross-platform content initiative celebrating the Charter and the privileges it ensures.The documentary reviews the evolution of the Charter and each of its guarantees, and is available in 11 languages: Cantonese, Cree, English, French, German, Inuktitut, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi and Spanish. Broadcast partners for the program include Access Alberta, APTN, BookTV, channel m, Corus Entertainment Inc.'s CHEX Peterborough and CKWS Kingston channels, Canadian Learning Television, Knowledge Network, OMNI, and SCN. The documentary received the 2006 Canadian Ethnic Media Award as best television program.The Fundamental Freedoms Project is a bilingual website (http://www.decima.com/reports/www.charterofrights.ca / http://www.chartedesdroits.ca/) and an extension of the documentary, yet it remains unique to its platform. The Charter is dissected into its sections and extensive content regarding its history and its impact on Canadian society and case law are included. Almost two hours of exclusive video and audio are part of the site, in addition to critical ‘plain language' content explaining the Charter in simple form. Putting ‘fun' in The Fundamental Freedoms Project is the Virtual Charter section of the site. The tool allows users to ‘zoom in' and explore the document in over 20 languages. The http://www.charterofrights.ca/ site includes a dozen Teacher Guides encouraging interactive experiences for classroom teaching and discussion. The Teacher Guides are linked closely to the content of the documentary and to national high school curriculums. The site is live in five languages - Chinese, English, French, German and Italian - with additional languages in development. Other future features planned for the site include user-generated content, additional streaming video and regularly updated case law - after all, it's not like the Supreme Court is shutting down any time soon!The Fundamental Freedoms Project has created partnerships with several key history and social science organization including Canada's National History Society (publishers of The Beaver and Kayak for Kids magazines), Historica! and the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS).
