CTF launches consultation process for new fund

The Canadian Television Fund will kick off an online consultation process with industry stakeholders on Aug. 6 to map the way forward for a new Canadian Media Fund (CMF).The process will focus on key policy issues that will guide the newly created CMF. The CMF is an amalgamation of the Canadian Television Fund and the Canadian New Media Fund and is expected to be operational on April 1, 2010. The consultation process, to be carried out in a virtual town hall proceeding, will include written submissions and focus groups. CTF officials will present briefing notes on key policy issues and stakeholders will be asked to provide input, which will in turn be subject to a review and further comment from the Fund. “This consultation with the industry is critical to a successful launch of the CMF and we look forward to hearing the great ideas this process will generate,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO of the CTF in a statement. The CTF plans to hold provincial, territorial, and national focus groups in English, French, and Aboriginal languages. “The Focus Groups will provide participants with an opportunity to discuss their ideas, questions, and concerns,” according to a CTF press release. The CTF is crucial to the development of the television and film broadcast industry. On Jan. 17, influential members of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) met Industry minister James Moore on a slew of broadcasting issues. One of the topics they raised was the CTF. While in general the CAB members said they support the CTF, they also expressed that it should be evaluated in a fair, performance-based manner. In the recent federal budget tabled in late January, the CTF was allocated $200 million for the next two years. The CTF website indicates that the bulk of the consultation process will occur in September, where written submissions are expected on the Sep. 4th. The process for focus groups kicks off on Sep. 8th until Nov. 30th. It will be held in all of Canada’s major cities. On March 10, 2010, program guidelines will be issued.
