The CRTC denied an application Friday to operate an English-language commercial FM radio station in Prince Edward County, Ont. The application, made by 7253231 Canada Ltd., sought a licence to operate an adult alternative music format. The commission received interventions opposing the station from My Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Starboard Communications Ltd., Quinte Broadcasting Company Ltd. and Concerned Citizens of Prince Edward County. The intervening companies said the new station would be the sixth serving the Belleville-Trenton Central Area, which they argued is already well served by their services. MBC also said the new station would have a negative impact on its finances. Concerned Citizens argued the station would not be locally owned, and added that the programming would not benefit the community. The applicant told the commission in reply that having a locally focused station that can provide high-quality service should be the priority. The commission said in its decision to deny the application that the station would operate in an already served community, and would have a negative impact on the existing stations’ finances.
