Commercial radio sector reports slight rise in revenues in 2011

Total revenues for Canadian AM and FM radio stations reached $1.6 billion in 2011, up from $1.55 billion in 2010, the CRTC said Monday. In a release of the 2011 financial results for Canadian commercial radio stations, the commission said there were 13 additional FM radio stations in 2011, bringing the total FM Canadian radio stations to 535. The FM stations, the CRTC said, recorded $1.3 billion in total revenues in 2011, up from $1.24 billion a year earlier. The commission said revenues for ethnic FM stations grew by 11 per cent in 2011 to reach $19.8 million. The number of commercial AM radio stations continued to decline in 2011, going from 141 in 2010 to 134. Still, total AM revenues rose by 1.2 per cent, reaching $311 million, up from $307 million a year earlier. “For the first time since 2006, the French-language AM stations reported an increase in revenues, which climbed by 4.7 per cent to $11.7 million,” the commission said in a release. English-language AM stations reported one per cent growth in revenues, the CRTC said, rising from $272 million in 2010 to $274 million in 2011. The CRTC said revenues for ethnic AM stations rose 1.6 per cent to total $24.4 million. In major FM markets, the CRTC said, Toronto, Ont., recorded the highest commercial FM station revenues in 2011 at $192,188,786 million. The CRTC data showed Toronto FM revenues rose from $171,988,117 million in 2010. The Montreal, Que., market recorded commercial FM station revenues of $138,172,688 million, up from $133,607,934 million in 2010. In Vancouver, B.C., Canada’s third largest radio market, the CRTC data showed revenues reached $79,733,173 in 2011, up from $77,903,606 in 2010. AM commercial revenues were also highest in Toronto, totalling $79,639,347 in 2011, up from $79,002,853 million in 2010. The Vancouver AM commercial market was the second-largest, recording revenues of $41,087,497 million in 2011, up from $40,324,932 a year earlier. The CRTC data showed that Montreal stations reported AM commercial revenues of $19,483,709 million, which rose from $19,231,238 million in 2010. Revenues for CBC/Radio-Canada’s commercial AM and FM radio stations declined in 2011, the CRTC said. The commission data showed CBC’s FM station revenues totalled $256,765,620 million in 2011, down from $272,699,099 million the previous year. AM station revenues were also down, falling from $85,598,538 million in 2010 to $80,162,873 million in 2011. The CRTC said commercial radio stations in Canada employed 10,576 people in 2011 and paid $676.3 million in salaries.
