Rogers revenue lifts up, adjusted profit down in Q3

Rogers Communications Inc.’s total revenues were up slightly, by four per cent, from nearly $5.2 million in the third quarter of 2024 to $5.34 million in 2025, the company announced Thursday, Oct. 23. Media revenues saw the biggest change year-over-year, increasing by 26 per cent from $597 million to $753 million. Wireless revenue was up two per cent to $2.66 billion from $2.62 billion, while cable revenue increased just slightly, rising one per cent from $1.97 billion to $1.98 billion. Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization) was relatively flat, landing at $2.51 billion compared to $2.54 billion in Q3 the year prior. Profit landed at $5.8 billion, a stark increase from the $526 million reported last year. That jump was caused by a $5-billion non-cash gain “to recognize our existing interest in at fair value, which was required as a result of the MLSE transaction,” the company said in its written report. In early July, Rogers closed on its $4.7 billion acquisition of BCE Inc.’s 37.5 per cent interest in MLSE— the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors sports teams, making Rogers the majority owner with a controlling interest of 75 per cent. Rogers’ adjusted profit was down five per cent, to $726 million from $762 in the third quarter of last year. Capital expenditures were $964 million, down slightly from $977 million. Free cash flow was $829 million, down nine per cent from $915 million. In wireless, service revenue was flat at $2 billion. Net customer adds in its postpaid mobile phone segment were 62,000, compared to the 101,000 net adds the company saw in the same quarter last year. The company had a total of 10.9 million postpaid mobile phone subscribers by the end of the quarter, up by 262,000 from Q3 2024. Prepaid mobile phone net adds were 49,000, down 44 per cent from 93,000 net adds in Q3 2024. Its total of prepaid subscribers was 1.2 million, up by 44,000 from 1.16 million. Rogers used similar reasoning for the drops in net adds that it has in past quarters: a less active market, slowing population growth due to changes to government immigration policies, and its “focus on attracting subscribers to our premium 5G Rogers brand.” Average monthly revenue per mobile phone user (ARPU) was down by $1.87, from $58.57 in the third quarter of last year to $56.70. The company blamed the decrease on “ongoing competitive intensity in a slowing market.” Cable revenue was relatively flat, up one per cent to $1.98 billion. Rogers had net adds of 20,000 customers, up seven per cent from 13,000 in Q3 2024. Monthly ARPA (average revenue per account) was down in this segment as well, dropping to $136.05 from $140.36. Rogers’ total retail internet subscribers were 4.47 million, up from 4.24 million. It saw a net loss of 36,000 video subscribers, bringing its total to 2.52 million. Home phone net loss was 31,000, bringing the total number of such subscribers to 1.42 million.
