TVA begins another round of layoffs, 87 positions to be eliminated

Quebecor Inc. subsidiary TVA Group has launched another round of layoffs in its broadcasting section. Most of the jobs are unionized. “Permanent positions, temporary positions, and shifts related to the operations of the broadcasting segment are being cut in Montreal and at local stations in Trois-Rivières, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, and Rimouski,” the company said in a statement Wednesday, Nov. 12. “A total of 87 employees are affected.” It is the second round of layoffs this year for the Quebec broadcaster. It dismissed 30 workers in May. Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau repeated his attacks on the way the federal government has been handling what he described as a crisis in broadcasting. "It is troubling indeed that the federal government is ignoring this social and economic issue – particularly since three senior ministers heading important departments represent Quebec ridings, " he said in a news release, referring to Finance Minister François-Phillipe Champagne (St.-Maurice–Champlain, Que), Industry Minister Minister Mélanie Joly (Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Que.), and Canadian Identity Minister Stephen Guilbeault (Laurier–Ste-Marie, Que.) “We would expect them to be more concerned about the challenges we are facing. We must ask ourselves once again: how much longer will government authorities allow such an important industry to decline?,” he questioned. “How much longer will CBC/Radio-Canada receive excessive, steadily increasing financial support from the federal government with no strings attached, while competing directly with private broadcasters? How much longer will governments divide journalists, who are all doing essentially the same work for our democracy, into two classes by refusing to extend the journalism labour tax credit to television journalism?” TVA said it will pay the laid-off employees more than the mandated severance allowed. In some cases that will be a year’s salary. Two Bloc Québécois MPs sounded the alarm about the job losses. Heritage critic Martin Champoux (Drummond, Que.) said the federal government preferred inaction and castigated it for not making more resources available to private broadcasters in the budget earlier this month. Finance critic Jean-Denis Garon (Mirabel, Que.) noted that accessibility to information requires a healthy media landscape.
