Cogeco’s American operations boost bottom line in Q1 results

The CEO of Cogeco Communications Inc. is excited by the returns from American operations as the company released its first quarter results on Thursday, Jan. 15. The Quebec-based firm has operations on both sides of the border. Frédéric Perron was cheerful as he addressed financial analysts on a conference call. He said the good American news means that the company is on track to deliver on its previous fiscal guidance. “In the U.S., our turnaround is working,” he reported. “We’ve materially improved our subscriber trends for a second consecutive quarter, just as we said we would, translating into our best U.S. customer metrics in the past 15 quarters. And we’re just getting started.” Its penetration levels in the United States are under 20 per cent, allowing for opportunities for growth, he said. The company plans to launch an “Oxio-like” digital brand in the U.S. next month to further that expansion. Canadian operations were solid, he added, with good results from the telecom’s recently-introduced wireless service. He expressed some caution over the wireline element. “The wireline competitive intensity got a little heated in some of our markets during Black Friday and through the holidays so we expect a more modest wireline customer growth during Q2 but this remains manageable overall from a revenue perspective,” he noted. Perron was beaming over the great results from this week’s release of the semi-annual report of the Commissioner of Complaints about Telecom-television Services (CCTS). He bragged about Cogeco’s good numbers in the latest report. The firm had the best customer complaint reduction of any carrier monitored, he remarked. While overall complaints in the industry as a whole were up 17 per cent, Cogeco experienced a 15 per cent decrease in complaints. No breaches of the internet code were recorded by the CCTS for the company, he exclaimed. The CEO was cautious about internet expansion in Canada, saying it is "still early days." “Our Ontario programs are being dragged a little bit over time due to permitting things so that will take some time before it kicks in," Perron stated. For the three months ending Nov. 30, revenues were $707 million, a decline of 4.3 per cent from $738 million in 2024. Profit fell from last year’s $107 million to $93 million, a decrease of 13.1 per cent. Cash flows were $176 million, a fall of 19.4 per cent from the previous year’s $218 million. Net capital expenditures (capex) were $156 million, a jump of 3.5 per cent from 2024’s $150 million. ppark@thewirereport.ca
