Feds revive online safety advisory group ahead of forthcoming legislation

The Liberal government has brought back a group of policy experts and other stakeholders to inform the development of highly-anticipated legislation to address digital dangers and other harms found online. Each member of the 11-person task force, which mostly consists of academics, was also on the advisory group created by Justin Trudeau’s government in 2022. The original advisory body helped shape Bill C-63, also known as the Online Harms Act, which was introduced in 2024 but died on the Order Paper after Parliament was prorogued last year. As first reported by The Wire Report, the Liberals are preparing to table a second version of an online safety bill, though Canadian Identity Minister Marc Miller (Ville-Marie—Le Sud-Ouest—Île-des-Sœurs, Que.) has refused to provide any details or a timeline for its introduction. In a news release, Ottawa said the group was reconvened to help federal officials address new issues that “emerged since the last consultation due to significant technological changes,” including artificial intelligence (AI), chatbots, and other digital trends. The group held an initial meeting with Miller on March 10. “We all share a responsibility to keep our children safe—including online,” said Miller in a statement on March 12. “As a father and a grandfather, this is deeply personal to me.” “The members of this group are experts in a variety of aspects of the online safety and the online harm issue. Their perspectives are more important than ever as technology continues to evolve rapidly.” The members of the expert advisory group on online safety are as follows: — Amarnath Amarasingam, professor of religion and political studies at Queen’s University — Bernie Farber, founding chair at the Canadian Anti-Hate Network — Chanae Parsons, community activist and consultant at the IWK Health Centre — David Morin, professor of arts and humanities at the Université de Sherbrooke, also the UNESCO Chair in the Prevention of Violent Radicalization and Extremism — Emily Laidlaw, law professor at the University of Calgary, also the Canada Research Chair in Cybersecurity Law — Ghayda Hassan, psychology professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal — Heidi Tworek, public policy professor at the University of British Columbia, also the Canada Research Chair in History and Policy of Health Communications — Lianna McDonald, executive director of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection — Signa A. Daum Shanks, law professor at the University of Ottawa — Taylor Owen, professor of public policy at McGill University, also the Beaverbrook Chair in Media, Ethics and Communications — Vivek Krishnamurthy, law professor at the University of Colorado news@thewirereport.ca
