Copyright Board publishes proposed tariffsThe Copyright Board of Canada last week published two new proposed tariffs. Tariff 1.A would set the royalties to be collected by the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) for the public performance by telecommunication of music for 2005-2007. The board has also published a proposed royalty for the retransmission of distant radio and television signals in Canada for 2004-2008.Marketing Magazine taps 24/7 Canada for ad salesMarketing Magazine has signed an exclusive agreement with 24/7 Canada Inc. to represent the magazine’s web site for advertising. Marketingmag.ca offers banner, column and tower ads, skyscrapers, pop-ups and pop-unders in several different sections of the site, as well as The Marketing Daily e-newsletter with a distribution of 6,000.Avril Lavigne to offer tunes through AppleNapanee ON’s Avril Lavigne is offering a five-track live album through Apple’s online music store. Individual tracks are available for sale at US$0.99 each, or the full EP can be bought for US$4.95. Apple’s iTunes store isn’t available in Canada. The tracks were recorded during a March 23 gig in Ireland, reports Billboard magazine.Bell Fund says broadcasters understand online propositionA new report compiled by Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund board member Catherine Warren shows that broadcasters are committed to an online strategy as a way to increase revenues, though the sector continues to struggle with specific measures by which pay-offs can be seen. A key finding shows that both broadcasters and new media producers agree that having a TV show web site is strategic, but that metrics such as page views are inadequate to determine the rewards. The telco is also again the festival’s provider of telecom services.Government web sites see surge in trafficThe number of Canadians using the Internet on a monthly basis rose just 2.6% between October 2002 and May 2003, reports comScore Networks, but traffic to government web sites grew by 27.2% over the same period. Other data show that 52.9% of Canadians online visited a government web site in May 2003, leaps and bounds ahead of 29.7% in Australia, 24.2% in Japan, and 42.4% in the United States. Other findings show Canadians also spend more time on the government sites they visit than people from other countries, and view a greater number of pages.Industry Canada releases consultation on authenticationIndustry Canada has begun a consultation on principles for electronic authentication. A recently released consultation paper sets out several principles that would be used to provide guidance for the development, implementation and use of authentication products and services in Canada. The paper was developed by the department’s ecommerce branch with the participation of a broad range of industry experts.Extension granted to coalition in Tariff 22 Supreme Court caseA coalition of the Canadian Cable Television Association, the Canadian Association of Internet Providers and Bell Canada has been given a one-week extension, to July 25, to file its factum and other documents in its cross-appeal of the Tariff 22 music royalty case now before the Supreme Court of Canada (CNM, Apr. 3/03).Aliant awards funds to new media artistsEight Atlantic Canadian arts groups have won a total of $100,000 in assistance through the Aliant-Arts Council Cultural Innovation Fund. The winning projects encompass a wide range of educational efforts, artistic installations, R&D, and film. The winning projects are: Newfoundland Independent Film Makers Cooperative $12,050Support to conduct two week-long workshops on the techniques of digital film-making for local film and video artists. Topics will include lighting design and sound recording for digital film-making, as well as aspects of post-production film-making including editing on a digital workstation, creating visual special effects, digital sound design, and delivery of a finished digital film. Vessela Brakalova and Dougal Dunbar$12,000Support to create a series of six large “boxed” three dimensional works that use digital images, wire sculpture, and glass to explore images of the rural mailbox as a symbol of the profound changes to our society from advances in technology. Chris Darlington$10,200To create Chimera, a 20-minute digital film about a wrongly gender-designated child in 19th century Newfoundland. The film will use mainly archival photos from the period, which will be augmented using AfterEffects and Shake software to create a film reminiscent of the French Nouveau Roman style of film-making. Lori Clarke$15,000Support for the research, experimentation and design of a virtual holographic projection to be incorporated into a live production of the new media opera, together in a small place. Eastern Edge Gallery $13,750Support for the training of local new media artists in Arts Interface Device software with members of the Interaccess artist’s collective from Toronto, and the creation of a digital archive for contemporary Newfoundland and Labrador new media art. Andrea Cooper$14,000Support to create Gutted, a series of five digitally composited and animated sequences to be projected in a gallery environment with a sound scape that is activated by a viewer’s movement though the gallery space. Andy Jones$14,000Support for a new technical and production design for the play King of Fun. The new design will incorporate enhanced digital video, and virtual holographic projection to clearly distinguish between the two time and space dimensions that are integral to the script. Beth Oberholtzer$9,000Support to complete a digitally animated video loop as the centrepiece of the gallery installation The Story of Passion.
