Allstream’s fibre-optic network reaches 3,000-plus buildings

Manitoba Telecom Services Inc.’s Allstream unit said Wednesday that its national fibre-optic IP network is now hooked up to more than 3,000 buildings. Allstream, which provides communications services to businesses, said in a press release this marks a 50 per cent increase in the last three years. It added that in 2010 it embarked on a program focused on connecting multi-tenant buildings in proximity to other buildings already on the fibre network, which could be connected at a low cost. Allstream opens Chicago Internet point of presence

Allstream has a new Internet connection point of presence in Chicago, which will give Canadian Internet service providers (ISPs) and other network operators more capacity to exchange traffic with leading Canadian and international carriers, the company said. In a release Tuesday, Allstream said its new Internet exchange point will allow network operators to connect with more than 40 Canadian and international carriers, and will provide “physical connection points to the world’s telecommunications networks and Internet backbones.” This is the company’s second exchange point in Chicago, in addition to points in Seattle, Wash., New York, N.Y. and Buffalo, N.Y., and Allstream said it will lead to a “significant reduction” in how long it takes to exchange...
