Rogers, Telus on opposing sides of zero-rated music case

An undue-preference complaint against a music streaming service offered by Quebecor Inc.’s Videotron has Rogers Communications Inc. arguing that zero-rating the service is a net-neutrality violation, while Telus Corp. is supporting Videotron and saying the service does not harm consumers. CRTC approves 2 radio acquisitions

The CRTC on Wednesday approved two separate applications for radio station acquisitions from Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Ltd. in Grand Prairie, Alta., and Media ClassiQ Inc. in Montreal and Quebec City. The regulator approved Jim Pattison in one decision to acquire the assets of CIKT-FM from Bear Creek Broadcasting LP, and noted that the acquisition would serve “the public interest and furthers the objectives for the Canadian broadcasting system.” It said the transaction is worth about $4.7 million, and the buyer will contribute $279,535 in tangible-benefits payments over the...
