Gov’t denies SWIFT request to amend CRTC broadband fund

The federal government has declined an application by SouthWestern Integrated Fibre Technology Inc. asking for changes to the CRTC’s rural broadband fund.
SWIFT -- a non-profit organization that plans to construct a fibre-optic broadband network across Southwestern Ontario, Caledon and the Niagara Region -- asked the federal government to amend the fund by order-in-council last December. Among other requests, it wanted the government to remove restrictions on applications by municipalities and community-based intermediary organizations.
