Soccer channel’s licence revoked upon request

The CRTC said Tuesday that it has approved a request from soccer TV channel Gol TV, owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., to have its broadcast licence revoked as of Aug. 31. The notice on the CRTC's website said Gol TV has a Category 2 specialty channel licence and it would cease operations at the end of August. The application filed by Gol TV to have its licence revoked did not clarify why it was ending the service. Data from the CRTC shows the channel's revenue had declined for two years in a row, most recently by 4.6 per cent during the 12 months ended Aug. 31, 2014.
