Robert Ghiz to lead CWTA

Robert Ghiz, the former premier of Prince Edward Island, has been named president and CEO of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), the organization announced Monday. Ghiz will officially take the helm Jan. 1. He has nearly 20 years of experience in government affairs and public policy, including 12 years in elected office and four years as the province’s leader of the opposition, according to a Monday press release. “Robert’s extensive experience with all levels of government, as well as his well-earned reputation for forging strong strategic partnerships, will help ensure the wireless industry can continue to invest and innovate so Canadians can maximize the value of their wireless experience,” CWTA chairman Garry Fitzgerald said in the release. Telus cancelling pager service

Telus Corp. is ending its pager service within the next few months. Spokesman Chris Gerritsen confirmed that the service, currently available in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec, will no longer be maintained by the company after March 31.  He said in an email that the service was ending "because very few people still use it." Gerrtisen said Telus has been communicating with its customers "for the better part of a year" about this coming change. The CRTC's most recent communications monitoring report said 161,500 people subscribed to paging services in 2013, compared with 28.4 million subscribers for other wireless services in the same year.
