Federal bill raises stakes on copper theft

The Canadian Electricity Association on Wednesday praised a Conservative MP's private member's bill that treats copper theft from key infrastructure more seriously. The proposal by Vancouver South member Wai Young would amend the Criminal Code to treat "interference with critical infrastructure" with more severity, the CEA said in a press release Wednesday. “The introduction of this bill is a significant development as we seek to actively deter copper theft,” Jim Burpee, CEO of the CEA, said in the release.  “Given the high price of copper, thefts are on the rise."  An article in The Wire Report in 2012 detailed how new laws dealing with metal recycling in British Columbia helped reduce copper thefts from telecommunications providers,...
