Smartphones lead growth of ‘connected’ devices: IDC

Growing adoption of smartphones around the world will help drive growth in the total number of "smart connected devices" shipped to 1.8 billion this year, an increase of 15.6 per cent over last year, research company International Data Corp. said Tuesday.
IDC said in a news release that such connected devices include personal computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones.
It said growth in connected devices, which will grow further to 2.4 billion by 2018, is driven by smartphones, noting that sales of PC and tablets saw "a weak first quarter" this year.
Jitesh Ubrani, a research analyst with IDC, said in the release that smartphones are becoming "the first and primary computing device for many."
