IPv6 adoption markedly improved in 2016: CIRA

Canada has made significant strides in improving its network infrastructure as Internet service providers (ISPs) increased their adoption of the IPv6 protocol in 2016, according to a new report by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. Largely led by Rogers Communications Inc. and Telus Corp. introducing the technology on their networks in 2016, 18.6 per cent of Canadian network destinations are now IPv6 capable compared to 2.6 per cent at the start of 2016, placing Canada in the 14th spot in the world. “As the world has effectively run out of IPv4 addresses because of the growing demand for IP addressed by smart devices, and anticipating continued demand for more with the growth of , it is critical for Canadian operators to adopt IPv6 across their networks,” the report read. CIRA tracked Rogers’ network traffic and projected by 2020, Internet use will grow 500 per cent and connected devices in the home will nearly double to 20. “Continuous improvement in speed and quality of our Internet connectivity will be instrumental for Canada to fully participate in the digital future,” CIRA President and CEO Bryon Holland said in a Thursday press release. CIRA previously said service providers in the country were being too slow to adopt the new IP protocol. And a Public Policy Forum report in January found that Canada must make the switch to IPv6 in order to keep up with the proliferation of connected devices, including IoT. That report cited Alphabet Inc. statistics, which showed that Canada was sitting at 17.15 per cent adoption at the time. Still, Thursday’s CIRA report noted that Canada still lags well behind the United States, where 33.3 percent of network connections are IPv6 capable. Among some of the report’s other findings include average download speeds increasing five per cent in the last quarter of the year to 21.7 Mbps compared to the same period in 2015. Those results came from Internet performance tests it ran during the year. Average upload speeds also improved 21 per cent to 9 Mbps in the fourth quarter of 2016, compared to 7.4 Mbps in the same quarter last year.
