Amazon releases online video production suite

Amazon.com Inc. announced multiple pieces of Amazon Web Service-based (AWS) video publishing software, which the company claims will “eliminate the need to procure expensive equipment for video data centers,” according to a release on Monday. According to its release, Amazon aims to streamline the process under their own online software. Unveiled at the AWS re:Invent conference In Las Vegas, five new services now make up the AWS Elemental Media Services suite. They include MediaConvert, which formats and compresses video for playback on “virtually any” device, software to enable easy broadcasting of live video to TV and connected-devices called MediaLive, and MediaPackage, a service that delivers live-streamed content to internet devices. When using the media suite, content delivery will be powered by a service called MediaStore, which will transmit media from “optimized” storage. And MediaTailor will help content producers insert ads in the video “without sacrificing quality to increase viewer engagement and boost revenues,” the release read. The services are immediately available to “most customers in North America through the U.S. East and West Regions, and also are available in Europe and Asia,” said Amazon spokesman Kellen Davison in an email, remarking that Quebec could be next. According to the release, these tools have been behind some of Amazon’s own moves into the content provider industry. Streaming 11 NFL games to internet-connected devices and “tens of millions” of customers, the Amazon Prime team used the media suite to create user-selectable audio tracks and targeted ads, which were integrated to viewing experience. “In our preview of the new AWS Elemental Media Services, we have been impressed by the speed of setup of an AWS Elemental MediaLive encoding, AWS Elemental MediaPackage and Amazon CloudFront CDN workflow to rapidly start delivering a live streaming service in minutes,” said Mat Yelavich, chief information officer of Nine, a broadcast and video business which trialed the service. “We see plenty of opportunity to mature and expand our live streaming capabilities with AWS Elemental Media Services. Also revealed at re:Invent was a virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) service called Amazon Sumerian, according to a seperate press release on Monday. Sumerian’s goal is to lower the barrier to entry in producing 3D, immersive environments, by removing the need for specialized software and expertise in that space. A preview of the service also starts on Monday.
