Rogers laying off customer service workers; Corus cutting Global News staff, radio jobs

Rogers Communications Inc. is laying off a number of its customer service workers. Company spokesperson Zac Carreiro told The Wire Report in an emailed statement that the majority of the cuts affect people based in Ontario. “As customer habits continue to evolve, we’re investing in digital tools and self-serve options that help our customers find what they’re looking for faster. While a small percentage of roles in our customer service team are impacted, we continue to grow and hire people to support our operations across the country,” Carreiro said. Approximately 400 people were affected, according to reporting by MobileSyrup, which cited an anonymous source. Carreiro did not confirm that figure or specify the number of people cut in his statement to The Wire Report. The cuts were first reported by The Globe and Mail and in a post on social media. According to the Globe, Rogers will continue to work with third-party providers for additional support and online chat services will remain available to the company’s customers. The law firm Samfiru Tumarkin LLP says it is reviewing severance packages offered to “dozens” of Rogers employees, “many of whom had long tenures with the company.” “In today’s challenging economy — where AI adoption, tariff threats, and industry shifts are creating uncertainty — severance compensation should reflect not just tenure and position, but also the difficulty of finding comparable work,” Lior Samfiru, the firm’s national co-managing partner said in a statement provided to The Wire Report. While Rogers reported a three per cent increase in revenue for its fourth and final quarter of fiscal 2024, up to $5.48 billion from $5.33 billion in Q4 2023 and a 70 per cent spike in profit, reaching $558 million compared to $328 million, it also reported $42.8 billion in debt. The company’s peers have been implementing cuts, as well. BCE Inc. is seeking to eliminate up to 1,200 positions in its telecommunications division, while Telus Corp. is offering buyouts to approximately 700 employees across the nation, according to a report in The Globe and Mail. Corus lays off Global News, Corus Radio staff Meanwhile, when asked to confirm a recent Broadcast Dialogue report of more layoffs at Corus Entertainment Inc., a company spokesperson told The Wire Report in an email Friday that “we have made changes in some markets across the Global News and Corus Radio divisions.” The spokesperson did not specify how many people were affected, saying the changes are “part of our efficiency review, and in order to streamline operations and continue to deliver audiences with premium news and audio content.” “More information on impacts to programming and upcoming changes to come,” the spokesperson said. Corus experienced a challenging first quarter of fiscal 2025, marked by continued declines in revenue and profitability across both its television and radio segments. The company’s overall revenue decreased by 12 per cent year-over-year to $327.2 million, while profits fell by 30 per cent to $84.2 million. By the end of August last summer, the company said it had expected to have laid off 800 of its full-time staff, or 25 per cent of its roster, since the beginning of fiscal 2023. news@thewirereport.ca
