Global News sees unspecified number of job cuts as Alberta operations shut down

Corus Entertainment Inc. is shutting down Global News operations in Calgary and Edmonton, resulting in an unspecified number of layoffs. As first reported by the Western Standard on Wednesday, the company will be transferring its production to Toronto, as the company faces advertising revenue decline in television and radio broadcasting. In a statement to The Wire Report on Thursday, a spokesperson from Corus said “as part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen and sustain our news divisions, we have made some changes designed to improve efficiency and to support high-quality journalism.” It is not clear how Corus plans to do that, or how many jobs will be cut, but the statement said “while some roles have been impacted as we centralize aspects of control room functions, we are adding additional roles in news gathering.” Corus also did not specify how many roles will be added. In a statement posted on X, Tory MP Stephanie Kusie (Calgary Midnapore, Alta.) said “for the second time in less than two weeks, Albertans working in media have lost their livelihoods — and residents have lost a valuable resource: their local news.” Earlier this month, Rogers Communications Inc. cut 230 jobs in its sports and media department, shutting down six radio stations across Canada. In its statement, Corus said it “will continue to maintain local news delivery with separate local content, studios, and jobs in Calgary and Edmonton.” But according to Kusie’s statement, “centralizing regional newscasts means the local angle will be lost.” “Having local news is important,” she wrote. “It’s part of our everyday routine here in Alberta. We count on these programs to deliver crucial information that affects us.” Corus did not respond to The Wire Report’s questions on whether the job cuts are effective immediately, or when the employees were notified of their terminations. “It’s a sad day,” Kusie wrote. “Sad because life has changed for many families across this province as they begin to fill out EI paperwork. Sad because the glue that connects our communities is being stripped away.” “My heart goes out to everyone affected by these terrible layoffs.” news@thewirereport.ca
