UPDATED: David Myles to remain Miller’s parliamentary secretary after ‘clerical mistake’

Liberal MP David Myles (Fredericton–Oromocto, N.B.) will stay on as parliamentary secretary for Canadian Identity Minister Marc Miller after cabinet approved an order-in-council shuffling him out of the position last week.
Myles is currently listed as parliamentary secretary to Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin (Toronto–Danforth, Ont.), as well as secretary of state for nature Nathalie Provost (Châteauguay—Les Jardins-de-Napierville, Que.).
However, Miller (Ville-Marie—Le Sud-Ouest—Île-des-Sœurs) clarified that Myles will keep his duties in the Canadian heritage file, in addition to his responsibilities under Provost.
“I think it was a clerical mistake of some nature,” Miller told reporters outside West Block on Thursday. “I wasn’t firing him. I don’t think I can fire him [but] I’ll have to check.”
“David’s an absolute gem as parliamentary secretary. I don’t know where the error occurred.”
It’s not clear whether cabinet will need to approve another order-in-council reinstating Myles in his role as Miller’s parliamentary secretary. The Privy Council Office did not immediately respond to The Wire Report‘s request for comment.
However, Renée Proctor, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed that “there was an error” with the order-in-council, adding that it’s the government’s intention to “fix it.”
“I was a bit worried for a second,” said Myles, walking into Parliament alongside Miller.
The Juno-winning singer turned politician was initially appointed to the role within Canadian Heritage following last year’s federal election.
The order was approved on May 29, when all parliamentary secretaries, who work directly under cabinet ministers, were re-appointed for another year.
Parliamentary secretaries receive an additional $20,900, on top of their MP pay of $217,700.
Madeleine Chenette (Thérèse-De Blainville, Que.) will stay in her role under Miller, leaving her as his parliamentary secretary in tandem with Myles.
Elsewhere, Carlos Leitao (Marc-Aurèle-Fortin, Que.) and Karim Bardeesy (Taiaiako’n—Parkdale—High Park, Ont.) both remain under Industry Minister Mélanie Joly (Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Que.), while Pauline Rochefort (Nipissing—Timiskaming, Ont.) stays to assist secretary of state for rural development Buckley Belanger (Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River, Sask.).
Meanwhile, AI Minister Evan Solomon’s (Toronto Centre, Ont.) parliamentary secretary remains Taleeb Noormohamed (Vancouver Granville, B.C.).
