Telecoms, broadcasters lobbying on COVID-19 effects

Telecom and media companies, including Quebecor Inc. and Corus Entertainment Inc., have begun adding COVID-19-related registrations to their lobby files in recent weeks. On April 15, Corus added “discussions of COVID-19-related financial impacts and potential government responses” to the registration under its CEO Doug Murphy. In late March, Corus’ consultant lobbyist Sarina Rehal also registered to lobby on the effects of COVID-19 on the company. Roku Inc. is launching its no-cost ad-supported video-on-demand service (AVOD) The Roku Channel in Canada, according to a blog post Monday. People who own Roku TVs or the Roku streaming box will have immediate access to “hundreds” of TV shows, movies and documentaries, said the post. CBS Corp.’s sports division said Tuesday that next month it will live-stream a regular-season National Football League game for the first time. The game featured is an Oct. 4 matchup between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, which is taking place at Wembley Stadium in London.
