Verizon plans to test 5G next year

Verizon Communications Inc. announced Tuesday it has created a roadmap to begin field trials for 5G wireless technology as early as 2016. The company said in a press release it is partnering with Alcatel-Lucent, Ericson AB, Cisco Systems Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Smartphone sales of China’s Xiaomi drive global growth

Global smartphone shipments were up 25.2 per cent in this year's third quarter from a year earlier, driven largely by explosive growth in devices coming from China's Xiaomi, International Data Corp. said in a release Wednesday. IDC said that preliminary data indicates there were 327.6 million shipments of smartphones during the three-month period, compared to 261.7 million one year earlier. The top two vendors remained Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc.
