SOCAN appeals decision in making-available-right case

The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) has filed an appeal in Federal Court arguing that a Copyright Board decision that established the making available right under the Copyright Act applies to downloads erred in neglecting to apply rates on those royalties.
In the appeal filed last week, the organization says the board made several errors in its August judgment, which determined that groups theoretically have the right to collect royalties on music that has been made available for download online.
