ROW Editorial

telecom | 12/15/2004 5:00 am EST

The opinions expressed in this editorial are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Decima Reports. Ted Rogers’ recent revelation that the average revenue per user from CityFido subscribers was $62 should shut naysayers up about the uneconomic approach to pricing undertaken by post-restructuring Microcell Telecommunications, let alone the apparent nonsense of CityFido itself. That figure should also help dispel the myth that large baskets of minutes don’t work in Canada.   It also stands to be pointed out that ARPU derived from the CityFido home phone replacement initiative is entirely consistent with what is currently being recorded in the marketplace by Canada’s Big Three. Bell Mobility reported post-paid ARPU of $63, and Telus Mobility and Rogers Wireless both re-corded post-paid ARPUs of $62.  Despite the healthy and industry standard ARPU rates of CityFido, cable TV, media and wireless communications baron Ted Rogers recently stated that he had "no commitment" to maintaining the...

Canada’s telecommunications regulatory framework is built on an inaccurate assessment of the true state of local telephony competition, and the CRTC’s current siloed approach to measuring competition is outdated, a new report from the SeaBoard Group argues. Old Bottles, New Wine asserts that technological innovation in the form of Voice over IP (VoIP) and landline substitution by wireless should force the commission to take a broader view of the local telecommunication services competition than it does currently.  The study concludes that the commission should take a more forward-looking view of the telecommunications market with an integrated approach in which the silos of...

We hope Bell’s Part VII application, in fact, opens the floodgates to creative proposals from each of the stakeholders involved to cut red tape and streamline procedures both large and small. Some of the pushback against Bell’s application stems from what competitors say were bungled tariff filings, and there is an industry feeling that Bell’s troubles have in some degree been brought on itself. Further backlash was inevitable since Bell Canada and TELUS, of course, stand to benefit entirely from a streamlined tariff application process, and the competitors would be forced to...
