Canadians’ online phone, video calls doubled: StatsCan

The number of Canadians who used online technology to make phone or video calls nearly doubled from 2010 to 2012, Statistics Canada said. StatsCan said in a release Monday that the number of Canadians who used services such as Microsoft Corp.-owned Skype or Apple Inc.’s FaceTime to make phone or video calls over the Internet rose from 24 per cent in 2010 to 43 per cent in 2012. More Canadians also consumed television and film content online: 39 per cent reported watching TV online, up from 33 per cent in 2010, while 54 per cent “downloaded or watched movies or video clips online,” an increase from 47 per cent in 2010, StatsCan said.
