Wi-Fi technology expanded further at Detroit airportWi-Fi wireless Internet service has been extended at the Detroit Metropolitan Way County Airport to include the L.C. Smith Terminal. In partnership with wireless communications provider Concourse Communications Group, the airport introduced wireless Internet service to its McNamara Terminal/Northwest World Gateway in December.  "The service has been so well received that we decided it was worthwhile to offer Wi-Fi to our other passengers traveling through the airport’s older L.C. Smith Terminal," said Detroit airport CEO Lester Robinson. "We are also exploring the incorporation of Wi-Fi into our new North Terminal complex, which will replace the older Smith and former Davey terminals by 2008." The Detroit airport is one of 15 major airports in the United States offering Wi-Fi availability in its terminals. Since the December rollout of the service, more than 6,000 users used the McNamara Terminal Wi-Fi system, with usage more than doubling after the first month....

The opinions expressed in this editorial are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Decima Reports. Unique Broadband’s lawsuit against Microcell Telecommunications, two of its subsidiaries and Allstream Corp., appears to lay solid foundations for a case of breach of contract and conspiracy.  Some of the most damning evidence alleged by UBS in its suit comes in the form of an admission by John McLennan, vice-chair of Allstream, that the company had been working behind UBS’ back to form a joint venture with Microcell’s Inukshuk Internet Inc. subsidiary.  Given that Allstream and UBS had purportedly already been in joint venture discussions of their own, and that Allstream was privy to confidential business strategy information, it appears as though UBS has a slam dunk for a case of conspiracy.  Microcell’s alleged transgressions aren’t as sexy, but equally damning. According to UBS, Microcell allegedly tried to get out of the spectrum sharing arrangement the two companies signed early in 2003,...

Whether it’s the theft of secrets by nefarious digital means, or the downloading of entertainment products, the supports upon which our system of innovation rely are in danger even as the Internet opens up new collaborative ways of sharing information.   Our own internal analysis of music downloading, for instance, leads us to believe that peer-to-peer file sharing of music takes just under $100 million out of the system in Canada every year - about what the music industry claims. That number will climb higher as advances in compression and broadband speeds allow DVD movies and other big files to be traded by more than just the most patient of us. As one solution to the problem, the government has put it on the table that ISPs might be made to pay a...
