CRTC gives TVA Sports more flexibility on ad scheduling

The CRTC has given Quebecor Inc.’s TVA Sports fewer restrictions on when it can broadcast ads, saying that the channel can now “average the maximum amount of 12 minutes of advertising material offered in each clock hour over the broadcast day.” It noted in Tuesday’s decision that TVA competitor BCE Inc.’s RDS was given the same flexibility in its licence renewal in May 2017. Previous licence requirements stated that the channels “shall not distribute more than 12 minutes of advertising material during each clock hour.” Quebecor had argued that loosening the requirements...

CRTC consulting on mandatory carriage renewals

The CRTC will consider mandatory distribution licence renewals for nine television channels when it holds a hearing next year, the regulator said in a Tuesday release. The commission said it will consider the renewal for the national broadcast of eight networks, and one in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories which, if approved, will continue to be required programming on basic packages. The hearing will be held in Gatineau, Quebec, on April 30, with deadlines for submissions being November 16.
