CRTC approves, with changes, Shaw’s 1500 wholesale service

Tuesday the CRTC approved an application by Shaw Communications Inc. to introduce internet 1500 wholesale high-speed access service (1.5 Gig service). It denied three conditions suggested by Shaw and also dismissed a request from TekSavvy Solutions Inc. for administrative monetary penalties (AMP) on Shaw.

CRTC approves aggregated and disaggregated Giga service from Quebecor

Tuesday Quebecor Inc.’s Videotron was granted approval by the CRTC for reintroduction of aggregated and disaggregated Giga service and introduction of aggregated and disaggregated 1.5 Giga service. Last November the telecom applied to reintroduce third-party internet access (TPIA) of services with download speeds of 501-1000 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 0-100 Mbps and to unveil 1.5 Giga service with download speeds of 1001-1500 Mbps and upload speeds of 0-100 Mbps. There were no interventions on the telecom notice.

Scott says CRTC will never regulate user-generated content under current Bill C-11 

The CRTC is generally supportive of Bill C-11, the revised broadcasting act, and does not have the authority to regulate user-generated content, according to remarks chair Ian Scott made last week in a speech to students at Ryerson University.

UPDATED: Gov. launches Online News Act, will mandate bargaining between outlets and web giants for compensation

New legislation from the Government of Canada will mandate negotiations between news organizations and global web giants like Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc.‘s Google, in order to establish commercial deals for the sharing of news content, to be backstopped by final offer arbitration from the CRTC. News organizations will be able to bargain collectively under the act.

Feds rollout $20 a month internet for low-income families and seniors

The federal government is providing low-income families and seniors with broadband services at reduced rates. On Monday it unveiled the second leg of its Connecting Families Initiative. The first part of the initiative was launched in 2018.
