Corus, iLoveTV interactive trial decried as ‘stupid’ by Grammy-winning filmmaker

Toronto-based iLoveTV Entertainment Inc. will put its two-screen interactivity technology to the test April 6 when Corus Entertainment Inc.’s Documentary Channel uses it to enhance a broadcast of a documentary. The system uses markers in a broadcast to push content at users on a web site, and Corus will be the first high-profile trial of the product. The deal may also be one of the first in Canada to raise controversial questions about how much artistic control authors should have over their works in the digital environment, and what the appetite will be for two-screen content.

ITV market already protected by undue preference rules: CCTA submission

Existing rules against undue preference in broadcasting and telecommunications are sufficient to protect interactive television (ITV) players without further regulation, argues the Canadian Cable Television Association (CCTA). In its submission to the CRTC’s fact-finding inquiry on ITV (PN 2001-113), the association says the sector is too under-developed to contemplate protecting the various carrier, broadcaster, and producer interests with specific regulations until technological and business issues are more mature.

Bell Mobility partners with Nextair for dispatching
Bell Mobility and Nextair Inc. have partnered to deliver dispatch applications over the wireless Internet. Bell will begin offering Nextair’s Internet-based mdispatch.com and DispatchForce as its preferred wireless dispatch products in early 2002. Mdispatch.com comes with built-in options that makes the product amenable to various industries including courier, field service, transportation and healthcare companies and organizations. Using mdisptach.com, dispatchers can assign new tasks from their PC, while mobile staff can respond to these tasks in the field using their wireless device. DispatchForce is a dispatch and scheduling application designed for large businesses that has greater functionality and can be customized to address specific needs of a particular organization. In other Bell news, one of its partnerships with McGraw-Hill Ryerson has blossomed into the Mobile Learning Consortium. The consortium now includes the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Seneca College and a number of other large corporations including Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Blackboard, Compaq and Avaya. Under guidelines of the initiative, first-year students at Seneca and NAIT will receive access to curriculum materials through a wirelessly enabled device. About 300 students will trial the service, which gives them access to materials for their Introductory Accounting course via a Compaq iPAQ handheld computer.
